The power couple who love Polynesian design, slow fashion and sustainable materials behind the beautiful bags from Elaisa Design.

bags entrepreneurship new product

I ran into Rahel and Richard at one of those Designer Markets where independent labels set up their stand and introduce their products to people all around. I set up my own a plucky girl stand and when I looked behind me, I got attracted by this range of beautifully handcrafted bags and purses just next to my stand. Yes, Rahel and Richard were my stand neighbors and Elaisa Design their brand.

What I got me attracted to them was not only the level of quality of their products and the fact that then put really lots of attention in where their source their materials from and how sustainable they are, but also, their aura. When you speak with Rahel, her soft, warm voice simply calms you down. They both love gardening and when you visit them in their studio / workshop, Rahel is happy to tell you all about her urban garden and is also ready to tell you the next spot in the forests of Nord-Rhein-Westfalia where you can harvest apples, pears and plums for free (as these fruit trees are there for everyone to eat from).

So, thinking about a plucky girl´s concept, I just could not, not have their products in our catalogue.

So, get to know them better. They are beautiful people.

What are strong work ethics for you?

We strongly believe in slow design and high quality. Excellent materials from small manufacturers combined with a fair production and the work of our own two hands.

Did you always wanted to be where you currently are?

Life can be very surprising at times. We enjoy the journey.

What do you think has been the most important thing you have accomplished so far?

A few life-changing decisions that last and impact others in a positive way.

What do you think it will be the most important thing you will accomplish in the future?
To always have the assurance that we are at the right place at the right time, doing what we are supposed to do.

Where does the idea for Elaisa Design as a business and the inspiration for the designs come from?

It started in Sweden, where we met for the first time. We love good travel gear and visiting places. Also, we find joy in great quality and support the idea of local production and fair fashion. Elaisa Design was born there and than.

Our designs come from our surroundings and also from our roots. Fiji plays a big part in it as we both love polynesian art.

We love simplicity and durability. Our designs are timeless and made for every day use.

How does a perfect day look like to you?

Sunshine, warmth, a big smoothie and off to the beach with our favorite bags, some music and a great book. Afterwards working in our studio and trying out some new ideas whilst we pack the orders from our customers. Later a lovely, healthy meal in the garden and some good chats with friends & family.
